Why this matters
Tomato roots are opportunists. Given loose, fertile soil, they’ll spread wide and deep, which means a bigger plant can pull water and nutrients from a larger reserve during a dry stretch. Given compacted or thin soil, the same variety stays stunted, wilts faster, and produces fewer, smaller fruit no matter how much you water or feed it later. The root system you build in the first weeks sets a ceiling on everything that follows.
