Doing it differently

Container-grown tomatoes need more frequent feeding than those in open ground, since potting mix holds far fewer reserve nutrients and watering flushes them out faster. A slow-release granular fertilizer mixed into the potting soil at planting, topped up with a diluted liquid feed once flowering begins, tends to work better than relying on liquid feed alone in containers.

Greenhouse tomatoes, grown in a more controlled environment with less rain to dilute or wash away fertilizer, often need closer attention to buildup of salts in the soil.
