Planting by the moon in June 2027 follows a waning Moon that turns new on June 4 at 3:40 p.m. ET, then a full Strawberry Moon on June 18 at 8:44 p.m. ET. According to almanac tradition, that sets four planting windows, from June 6-7 for leafy crops to June 24-26 for root crops. The Moon’s effect on crops is not proven, so read every date below as tradition. This guide is part of our wider planting by the moon series.
June 2027 at a glance
June 2027 opens with a waning Moon, 13% lit at noon ET on June 1, and the Moon reaches new on June 4. The month’s full moon is the Strawberry Moon on June 18 at 8:44 p.m. ET, with the Moon in Sagittarius.
According to almanac tradition, these are the planting windows for the month:
- Leafy crops (first quarter): June 6-7 (Moon in Cancer)
- Fruiting crops (second quarter): June 12-16 (Moon in Libra/Scorpio)
- Root crops, bulbs, perennials (third quarter): June 19-21 (Moon in Capricorn), June 24-26 (Moon in Pisces)
All of this is almanac tradition, and the local frost calendar comes first.
The Moon never overrides the calendar of the place where you garden. Frost dates and soil temperature decide whether a crop can go in the ground at all. A gardener who follows the Moon only chooses among the days that the local calendar already allows. For what your state’s season looks like, check your state’s planting calendar before you look at any lunar date.
The tradition behind these windows has two parts. The first is the quarter of the Moon. Gardeners who plant by the Moon pair each quarter with a type of crop: leafy crops with the first quarter, fruiting crops with the second, root crops with the third, and a rest period for the fourth. The second part is the zodiac sign the Moon occupies on a given day. Almanacs label signs fruitful, semi-fruitful or barren, and a window opens only when the quarter and a fruitful or semi-fruitful sign line up.
Every time on this page is Eastern time, and every sign uses the tropical zodiac. The dates come from positions computed with JPL DE421 and checked against the U.S. Naval Observatory. Looking further ahead? The full-year view is on our planting by the moon 2027 page.
What to plant in June
The planting season depends on the state, so no single list fits the whole country. A crop that suits June in one state may belong to another month somewhere else. Your state’s planting calendar, usually published by its cooperative extension service, is the place to confirm which crops can go in the ground where you live. This page does not give planting dates or soil temperatures for any place.
What the almanac does offer is a sorting system. The tradition groups crops by the part of the plant you harvest, and each group has its quarter. The crop lists below come from that tradition:
- Leafy crops, which bear above ground: lettuce, spinach, cabbage, broccoli and celery.
- Fruiting crops, above-ground plants that carry seed inside the fruit: when to plant tomatoes by the moon, when to plant peppers by the moon, plus beans, squash and corn.
- Root crops, bulbs and perennials: when to plant carrots by the moon, plus potatoes, garlic, onions and beets.
Each linked page walks through one crop and the lunar days that the almanac assigns to it. The crops without a link are named in the tradition’s lists, and we do not yet have a page for them.
Which of these belong in your garden this month is a question for your local calendar, not the Moon. Once you know a crop fits your state and your soil, the windows below narrow the choice to specific days. If your state’s calendar puts a crop outside June entirely, the June windows simply do not apply to it.
Gardeners who plant by the Moon also keep a fourth category, which is not planting at all. The almanac assigns the fourth quarter to weeding, pruning, turning the soil and composting. In June 2027 that rest period covers the days from June 1 up to the new moon on June 4, and again from the last quarter on June 27 at 12:54 a.m. ET to the end of the month.
Moon phases in June 2027
| Phase | Date and time (ET) |
|---|---|
| New Moon | June 4, 3:40 p.m. ET |
| First Quarter | June 11, 6:56 a.m. ET |
| Full Moon | June 18, 8:44 p.m. ET |
| Last Quarter | June 27, 12:54 a.m. ET |
The full moon of the month is the Strawberry Moon, the name used by the Old Farmer’s Almanac. It arrives on June 18 at 8:44 p.m. ET, with the Moon in Sagittarius. Because that moment falls in the evening, the day-by-day table later on this page shows the Moon 100% lit at noon on both June 18 and June 19, and it labels June 19 as waning. The Moon enters Capricorn on June 19 at 1:35 a.m. ET, a few hours after the full moon.
The other three phases fall in daytime hours. The new moon on June 4 at 3:40 p.m. ET comes after noon, so the noon reading for June 4 still shows the Moon at 0% and waning, and June 5 is the first day listed as waxing. The first quarter on June 11 at 6:56 a.m. ET comes before noon, which is why June 11 is already counted in the second quarter. These timing details matter when you read a window that starts or ends near a phase change.
Traditional planting days in June 2027
The almanac rule is a two-step test. First, the quarter of the Moon names the type of crop: leafy in the first quarter, fruiting in the second, root crops, bulbs and perennials in the third. Second, the Moon must be in a sign that this convention labels fruitful or semi-fruitful, and a window opens only when both conditions hold.
| Crop type | Quarter | Traditional days | Moon sign on those days |
|---|---|---|---|
| Leafy crops | First quarter | June 6-7 | Cancer |
| Fruiting crops | Second quarter | June 12-16 | Libra/Scorpio |
| Root crops, bulbs, perennials | Third quarter | June 19-21 | Capricorn |
| Root crops, bulbs, perennials | Third quarter | June 24-26 | Pisces |
No crop type is left without a window this month, so nothing reads “none this month” in the table. The fourth quarter has no planting window by design, because the tradition keeps it for the rest tasks described above.
How days are read, and why edges are partial
Each day in the table is read at noon ET. The Moon changes sign during the day, so the first or last day of a window can be only partly inside it. The exact sign change times are in the next section. A few examples show the pattern. The Moon leaves Cancer on June 7 at 6:12 p.m. ET, so the first window ends in the evening of June 7. The Moon enters Sagittarius on June 16 at 2:53 p.m. ET, which ends the fruiting window in the afternoon of June 16. The Moon enters Aquarius on June 21 at 2:00 p.m. ET and Aries on June 26 at 2:35 p.m. ET, so both root windows also end in the afternoon.
Why the windows have gaps
The gaps come straight from the sign labels. During the first quarter, from June 5 through June 10 at noon, the Moon moves through Gemini, Cancer, Leo and Virgo. Only Cancer carries a fruitful label in this convention, which leaves the two-day window of June 6-7. In the second quarter, Virgo on June 11 and Sagittarius on June 17 and 18 carry barren labels, so the window narrows to June 12-16. In the third quarter, Aquarius on June 22 and 23 sits between the two root windows. Aquarius is labeled barren, and that splits the quarter into June 19-21 and June 24-26.
Sources differ on a few of these labels. Virgo, Sagittarius and Aquarius are barren in the version used here, but some almanacs rank them differently. If you follow another almanac, its windows may not match these exactly.
Moon sign changes in June 2027
The Moon is in Aries at noon on June 1 and enters Taurus at 1:33 p.m. ET that afternoon. From there it moves through twelve more sign changes before the month ends. The table gives each entry in Eastern time, the tradition’s label for the sign, and the biodynamic day type used in the Maria Thun calendar.
| Date and time (ET) | Moon enters | Almanac label | Biodynamic day |
|---|---|---|---|
| June 1, 1:33 p.m. | Taurus | Semi-fruitful | Root day |
| June 3, 4:43 p.m. | Gemini | Barren | Flower day |
| June 5, 5:38 p.m. | Cancer | Fruitful | Leaf day |
| June 7, 6:12 p.m. | Leo | Barren | Fruit day |
| June 9, 8:00 p.m. | Virgo | Barren | Root day |
| June 11, 11:57 p.m. | Libra | Semi-fruitful | Flower day |
| June 14, 6:17 a.m. | Scorpio | Fruitful | Leaf day |
| June 16, 2:53 p.m. | Sagittarius | Barren | Fruit day |
| June 19, 1:35 a.m. | Capricorn | Semi-fruitful | Root day |
| June 21, 2:00 p.m. | Aquarius | Barren | Flower day |
| June 24, 3:00 a.m. | Pisces | Fruitful | Leaf day |
| June 26, 2:35 p.m. | Aries | Barren | Fruit day |
| June 28, 10:46 p.m. | Taurus | Semi-fruitful | Root day |
Two labeling systems sit side by side here, and they answer different questions. The fruitful, semi-fruitful and barren labels belong to the common almanac convention and are what opens or closes the windows above. The biodynamic column follows a separate system, in which signs are grouped into root, flower, leaf and fruit days. The two do not always agree. Taurus, for instance, is semi-fruitful in one system and a root day in the other. This page builds its planting windows only on the first system, and the biodynamic labels are listed for gardeners who follow that calendar instead.
Day by day: phase and Moon sign
The table lists every day of June 2027 at noon ET. It shows the Moon’s sign, the quarter (Q1 to Q4), the percent of the disc lit, and whether the Moon is waxing or waning. Because the readings are taken at noon, a sign that changes later in the afternoon, such as Taurus on June 1, still appears under the earlier sign. Check the sign change table above whenever a day sits on the edge of a window.
| Date | Moon sign | Quarter | Percent lit | Waxing or waning |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| June 1 | Aries | Q4 | 13% | waning |
| June 2 | Taurus | Q4 | 6% | waning |
| June 3 | Taurus | Q4 | 2% | waning |
| June 4 | Gemini | Q4 | 0% | waning |
| June 5 | Gemini | Q1 | 1% | waxing |
| June 6 | Cancer | Q1 | 5% | waxing |
| June 7 | Cancer | Q1 | 11% | waxing |
| June 8 | Leo | Q1 | 20% | waxing |
| June 9 | Leo | Q1 | 30% | waxing |
| June 10 | Virgo | Q1 | 41% | waxing |
| June 11 | Virgo | Q2 | 52% | waxing |
| June 12 | Libra | Q2 | 63% | waxing |
| June 13 | Libra | Q2 | 73% | waxing |
| June 14 | Scorpio | Q2 | 82% | waxing |
| June 15 | Scorpio | Q2 | 89% | waxing |
| June 16 | Scorpio | Q2 | 94% | waxing |
| June 17 | Sagittarius | Q2 | 98% | waxing |
| June 18 | Sagittarius | Q2 | 100% | waxing |
| June 19 | Capricorn | Q3 | 100% | waning |
| June 20 | Capricorn | Q3 | 98% | waning |
| June 21 | Capricorn | Q3 | 94% | waning |
| June 22 | Aquarius | Q3 | 88% | waning |
| June 23 | Aquarius | Q3 | 82% | waning |
| June 24 | Pisces | Q3 | 74% | waning |
| June 25 | Pisces | Q3 | 65% | waning |
| June 26 | Pisces | Q3 | 56% | waning |
| June 27 | Aries | Q4 | 45% | waning |
| June 28 | Aries | Q4 | 35% | waning |
| June 29 | Taurus | Q4 | 25% | waning |
| June 30 | Taurus | Q4 | 16% | waning |
Read down the percent column and the month’s shape shows up. The Moon starts at 13% and falls to 0% on June 4, climbs to 100% on June 18, then slides back to 16% by June 30. The month ends with the Moon in Taurus and still waning, so the next new moon belongs to July.
