Early Blight on Tomatoes: The Ringed Spots That Climb From the Bottom

Early blight on tomatoes is a fungal disease that shows up as small brown spots with concentric rings on the oldest, lowest leaves, then works its way up the plant over several weeks rather than days. It rarely kills a healthy tomato outright, but left alone it strips enough foliage to expose fruit to sunscald and cut your harvest hard. What you are looking at

Early blight is slow but persistent, moving through a planting over weeks rather than overnight. The oldest leaves first

The earliest sign is a scatter of small dark spots on the lower, older foliage, usually appearing once the plant is carrying fruit and the lower leaves have started to show some natural stress. These spots are easy to dismiss as nothing at first because they start so small.

Concentric rings up close

Look closer and each spot reveals a target pattern: distinct rings inside the lesion, running from a darker outer edge to a lighter brown center, often with a thin yellow halo where the dead tissue meets living leaf. This ringed look is the single most reliable visual marker of early blight and the detail that separates it from most other leaf spot diseases.

Stem cankers and fruit rot

As the disease progresses, lesions can appear on stems as dark, sunken cankers, sometimes girdling a young seedling stem at the soil line in a problem called collar rot. This is the mix-up that matters most. Late blight lesions are irregular and water-soaked, not ringed, and they can cover a leaf and spread through a planting within days rather than weeks. Fusarium Wilt

Fusarium wilt produces no leaf spots whatsoever. Where it comes from and when it strikes

Early blight is caused by a fungus in the genus Alternaria, and it survives between growing seasons in infected plant debris left in the soil, on the surface of stakes and cages that were not cleaned, and occasionally on seed. Once the season starts, spores splash up from that residue onto the lowest leaves during rain or overhead watering, which is why the disease so reliably begins at the bottom of the plant rather than the top.

From there, spores spread short distances by wind and rain splash to neighboring plants and to higher leaves on the same plant. The fungus favors warm conditions paired with extended periods of leaf wetness, whether from rain, heavy dew, or overhead irrigation that keeps foliage damp for hours at a stretch. Plants under stress from heat, drought, or heavy fruit load are more vulnerable, since stressed and aging tissue is easier for the fungus to colonize than vigorous new growth.
