Why these varieties and not others

The bloom group is a relative order, not a calendar date. In a warm spring in one region, group B varieties might open in early April. In a cooler climate, the same group opens weeks later. What stays fixed is the sequence: group B varieties bloom after the earliest group and before the latest, wherever they’re grown. What bloom group matching does not guarantee

What stops the whole system, regardless of how many compatible trees are nearby, is weather during the bloom window itself. Cold, wind, or wet conditions keep bees from flying, and no amount of partner planting compensates for a week of bad weather when the blossoms are open. Grafting a single pollinator branch onto an existing Gala is a lighter version of the same idea. It’s less disruptive than a full multi-graft tree and can be done on a tree already several years old, but it only works if the graft takes and the branch itself is allowed to flower rather than pruned back like the rest of the canopy.
A columnar apple variety, planted a few feet away, takes up little more room than a fence post and can serve as the partner if its bloom overlaps Gala’s, though columnar varieties tend to produce less pollen than a full-sized tree simply because they carry fewer blossoms.
