Planting by the Moon in November 2027: Dates, Moon Signs and Traditional Planting Days

Gardeners who plant by the Moon will find traditional windows for leafy, fruiting and root crops in November 2027, spread between November 3 and November 30. The Beaver Moon is full on November 13 at 10:25 p.m. ET, and the new moon follows on November 27 at 10:24 p.m. ET. Everything below is almanac tradition, paired with astronomy computed in Eastern time. For the wider system, start with planting by the moon.

November 2027 at a glance

The month opens with a waxing Moon in its first quarter, 11% lit at noon ET on November 1, and closes with a waxing Moon again, 7% lit on November 30. In between comes the Beaver Moon, full on November 13 at 10:25 p.m. ET, with the Moon in Taurus. According to almanac tradition, the planting windows this month are:

  • Leafy crops (first quarter): November 3-4 (Moon in Capricorn), November 30 (Moon in Capricorn)
  • Fruiting crops (second quarter): November 8-9 (Moon in Pisces), November 12-13 (Moon in Taurus)
  • Root crops, bulbs, perennials (third quarter): November 14 (Moon in Taurus), November 17-18 (Moon in Cancer)

These windows are tradition, not a proven effect of the Moon on crops. Frost dates and soil temperature where you live decide whether a crop can go in the ground at all. For gardeners who follow the Moon, it only chooses among days the local calendar has already opened. Your state’s planting guide is the place to check those limits.

The almanac also sets aside a stretch for rest. Its fourth quarter runs from the last quarter on November 20 at 7:48 p.m. ET to the new moon on November 27, and the tradition gives that stretch to weeding, pruning, turning the soil and composting rather than sowing.

The sections below go from the general to the exact. First the crop groups, then the four phases, then the windows in a table, then every sign change, and finally a row for each day of the month. For the whole year in one place, see planting by the moon 2027.

What to plant in November

The almanac sorts crops into groups, and each group has its own part of the lunar cycle. Which of these crops have a planting season in November depends on the state, and sometimes on the part of a state. The state planting calendars from your cooperative extension office or state agricultural agency will tell you what can go in the ground where you live. This page gives no planting dates or soil temperatures of its own.

Leafy and fruiting crops

According to almanac tradition, leafy crops that bear above ground belong to the first quarter. The tradition lists lettuce, spinach, cabbage, broccoli and celery in this group. Fruiting crops, meaning above-ground crops that bear seed inside the fruit, belong to the second quarter. The tradition lists tomatoes, peppers, beans, squash and corn here. In November 2027 the leafy windows are November 3-4 and November 30, and the fruiting windows are November 8-9 and November 12-13. The exact hours are in the table further down.

Root crops, bulbs and perennials

The third quarter, from the full moon to the last quarter, is the almanac’s time for root crops, bulbs and perennials. Potatoes, carrots, beets, garlic and onions are the examples the tradition gives. This site has a page on each of the crops below, with the Moon rule for the whole year:

The November windows for this group are November 14 and November 17-18. Gardeners who plant by the Moon would hold a crop for one of those days only after their own calendar says it can be planted.

Moon phases in November 2027

Four phases fall in the month, each at an exact moment. Times are Eastern (ET).

Phase Date and time (ET)
First Quarter November 6, 4:00 a.m. ET
Full Moon (Beaver Moon) November 13, 10:25 p.m. ET
Last Quarter November 20, 7:48 p.m. ET
New Moon November 27, 10:24 p.m. ET

The full moon of the month is the Beaver Moon, the name used by the Old Farmer’s Almanac. It peaks on November 13 at 10:25 p.m. ET, with the Moon in Taurus, a sign this convention labels semi-fruitful. The Moon entered Taurus on November 12 at 7:57 a.m. ET and leaves it on November 14 at 1:14 p.m. ET. Because the peak comes late on a Saturday evening, the noon reading on November 13 shows 100% lit and still waxing. The noon reading on November 14 shows 99% lit and waning.

The rule

The almanac rule is two-part. First, each crop type has a quarter of the lunar cycle: leafy crops in the first, fruiting crops in the second, root crops, bulbs and perennials in the third. Second, the Moon should be in a fruitful or semi-fruitful sign on the day. This convention labels Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces fruitful, and Taurus, Libra and Capricorn semi-fruitful.

Crop type Quarter in the tradition Days Moon sign on those days
Leafy crops First quarter November 3-4
November 30
Capricorn
Capricorn
Fruiting crops Second quarter November 8-9
November 12-13
Pisces
Taurus
Root crops, bulbs, perennials Third quarter November 14
November 17-18
Taurus
Cancer
Rest: weeding, pruning, turning soil, composting Fourth quarter November 21-27 (no planting window) Virgo, Libra, Scorpio

Every planting type has at least one window in November 2027, so none needs a “none this month” entry. The fourth quarter is the exception by design, since the tradition reserves it for rest tasks. That is why Libra and Scorpio, labeled semi-fruitful and fruitful, still produce no planting window between November 21 and November 27.

Reading the days

Days in this table are read at noon ET, and the Moon changes sign during the day. A window’s first or last day can therefore be partial. The exact sign change times are in the next section.

The clearest case is Taurus. The Moon is in Taurus from 7:57 a.m. ET on November 12 to 1:14 p.m. ET on November 14. The second quarter ends with the full moon at 10:25 p.m. ET on November 13. So the fruiting window in Taurus runs through the evening of November 13, and the root-crop window in Taurus covers the hours from that full moon until 1:14 p.m. ET on November 14.

The Cancer window ends on a clock time too. The Moon enters Cancer on November 16 at 4:39 p.m. ET and moves into Leo on November 18 at 7:27 p.m. ET. The Pisces window sits inside a longer stay in the sign, from November 7 at 12:09 p.m. ET to November 9 at 11:38 p.m. ET. The Capricorn window on November 30 follows the Moon’s entry into that sign on November 29 at 8:18 p.m. ET.

Moon sign changes in November 2027

The Moon is in Sagittarius when the month begins and passes through the whole zodiac before it ends. The labels below come from two separate conventions. The first is the fruitful, semi-fruitful and barren scale used by gardening almanacs. The second is the biodynamic calendar of Maria Thun, which groups signs into root, flower, leaf and fruit days. Signs are in the tropical zodiac.

Date and time (ET) Moon enters Almanac label Biodynamic day type
November 2, 12:40 p.m. Capricorn Semi-fruitful Root day
November 5, 12:13 a.m. Aquarius Barren Flower day
November 7, 12:09 p.m. Pisces Fruitful Leaf day
November 9, 11:38 p.m. Aries Barren Fruit day
November 12, 7:57 a.m. Taurus Semi-fruitful Root day
November 14, 1:14 p.m. Gemini Barren Flower day
November 16, 4:39 p.m. Cancer Fruitful Leaf day
November 18, 7:27 p.m. Leo Barren Fruit day
November 20, 10:25 p.m. Virgo Barren Root day
November 23, 1:52 a.m. Libra Semi-fruitful Flower day
November 25, 6:10 a.m. Scorpio Fruitful Leaf day
November 27, 12:00 p.m. Sagittarius Barren Fruit day
November 29, 8:18 p.m. Capricorn Semi-fruitful Root day

Sources differ on how to label Virgo, Sagittarius and Aquarius, so the barren label for those three reflects the common convention rather than a universal one. The traditional windows on this page use only the almanac label together with the quarter rule. The biodynamic column is given for readers who follow Maria Thun’s system, which has its own rules and is not combined with the quarter rule here.

Day by day: phase and Moon sign

One row per day, read at noon ET. The quarter column gives the almanac quarter, numbered 1 to 4, and the percent lit is the share of the Moon’s disk illuminated at that moment.

November 2 Sagittarius 1 18% Waxing
November 3 Capricorn 1 26% Waxing
November 4 Capricorn 1 35% Waxing
November 5 Aquarius 1 44% Waxing
November 6 Aquarius 2 53% Waxing
November 7 Aquarius 2 63% Waxing
November 8 Pisces 2 72% Waxing
November 9 Pisces 2 80% Waxing
November 10 Aries 2 87% Waxing

November 16 Gemini 3 92% Waning
November 17 Cancer 3 85% Waning
November 18 Cancer 3 75% Waning
November 19 Leo 3 65% Waning
November 20 Leo 3 54% Waning
November 21 Virgo 4 42% Waning
November 22 Virgo 4 32% Waning
November 23 Libra 4 22% Waning
November 24 Libra 4 13% Waning
November 25 Scorpio 4 7% Waning
November 26 Scorpio 4 2% Waning
November 27 Scorpio 4 0% Waning
November 28 Sagittarius 1 0% Waxing
November 29 Sagittarius 1 3% Waxing
November 30 Capricorn 1 7% Waxing

The quarter number changes on four dates in this table: November 6, November 14, November 21 and November 28. Those are the first days whose noon reading falls after a quarter phase. The percent lit peaks at 100% on November 13 and bottoms out at 0% on both November 27 and November 28, since the new moon arrives on the night of November 27 at 10:24 p.m. ET and the Moon starts waxing right after.
