What Pollinates Ozark Gold, and What Cannot

Ozark Gold apples need a neighbor to set fruit, and only four varieties will do it: Arkansas Black, Golden Delicious, Priscilla, or Rome Beauty. Plant any one of those alongside your tree and bees handle the rest. Skip anything else, even if the tag says “spring bloomer,” until you confirm it’s one of those four names.

The short answer

Plant Ozark Gold near Arkansas Black, Golden Delicious, Priscilla, or Rome Beauty and you have a working pair. Two trees are enough for a home garden, as long as the second tree’s pollen is fertile. None of the four varieties above is flagged as a sterile pollen producer, so a single Golden Delicious or Rome Beauty planted near Ozark Gold can pollinate it and be pollinated back in return. Nearly all apple varieties, Ozark Gold included, crop better with a compatible partner than alone, and this two-way exchange is what makes a two-tree orchard work.

The exception is a variety with sterile pollen, which can receive pollen but not give any. A garden built around two sterile-pollen varieties, or one sterile variety and nothing else, sets little or no fruit even when the bloom dates line up. If the only tree you can fit nearby turns out to be one of the sterile bloomers named further down, the fix is a third tree, not a bigger version of the second one.

Why these varieties and not others

Bloom group is the order in which apple varieties open their flowers each spring, sorted from earliest to latest. It is one piece of the broader logic behind apple pollination: two trees have to be shedding pollen at the same time before bees can move any of it. Clemson Cooperative Extension’s HGIC 1350 groups Ozark Gold and its four partners together in group C because, year after year, they flower in the same stretch of the season relative to the other groups on the chart.

What the group does not promise

That grouping is a relative order, not a fixed date. In a warm spring in one climate, group C might open in early April. In a cooler climate, the whole sequence shifts later, but Ozark Gold still opens with Arkansas Black, Golden Delicious, Priscilla, and Rome Beauty, not before them and not after. Sharing a bloom group only means the flowers are open on the same days. It says nothing about whether the pollen inside those flowers actually works, because pollen fertility is a separate genetic trait that has nothing to do with timing.

A shared bloom group also says nothing about parentage. A seedling apple cannot be pollinated by the tree it was bred from, even if both bloom on the same day and both carry fertile pollen. That check has to be done variety by variety, and it is easy to skip because the bloom chart looks like it has already answered the question. What cannot pollinate it

Both are triploid varieties with sterile pollen: the flowers open on schedule and bees visit them just as readily, but the pollen grains inside cannot fertilise another tree’s blossoms. Jonagold and Stayman can still receive pollen from Ozark Gold, or from Arkansas Black, Golden Delicious, Priscilla, or Rome Beauty, and set their own fruit from it. They simply give nothing back.

This is the trap worth naming directly: a garden planted with only Ozark Gold, Jonagold, and Stayman, or with any two sterile-pollen varieties, looks like it has matching bloom times and still sets little or no fruit. The bloom chart told you the flowers would overlap. It never told you the pollen would work in both directions, and that second check is the one growers skip.

Beyond this list

No parentage exclusion is published for Ozark Gold in the sources behind this page, so there is no known case of a variety that shares its bloom window but is barred from pollinating it for genetic reasons, the way a seedling can be barred from its own parent. That does not mean every other apple variety on the market will work. What else can carry the pollen

The second tree does not have to be one you planted yourself. A neighbor’s Golden Delicious or Rome Beauty blooming over the fence line does the same job as one in your own bed, provided bees travel between the two yards, which they routinely do. An ornamental crabapple flowering at the same time as Ozark Gold can also supply usable pollen. So can a single grafted branch of a compatible variety worked onto an existing tree, which puts a second bloom source inside the same canopy without a second trunk.

What stops all of this cold is weather, not distance. Cold or wet conditions during bloom keep bees from flying, and when bees stay in the hive, pollen does not move regardless of how many compatible varieties are standing nearby. A well-planned pair of trees ten feet apart can still set a poor crop in a spring when bloom week is rained out, and no amount of extra pollinator variety fixes that particular problem.

If there is no room for a second tree

Grafting solutions

A multi-grafted tree, carrying two or three compatible varieties such as Golden Delicious or Rome Beauty grafted onto the same trunk as Ozark Gold, gives every branch a pollen source within a few feet without a second planting hole. The cost is upkeep: each grafted variety grows at its own rate, and a multi-graft tree needs more careful pruning each year to stop the vigorous branch from shading out the slower one.

Grafting a single pollinator branch onto an existing Ozark Gold tree does the same job on a smaller scale. It is a one-time task for a grower comfortable with bench or bark grafting, and it solves the pollen problem without committing garden space to a whole second tree. It does not solve crowding in a canopy that is already dense, and a graft that fails to take leaves you back where you started until the next attempt.

Non-grafting solutions

A columnar variety of a compatible apple takes up little more room than a fence post and can be planted within a few feet of Ozark Gold, which suits a bed too narrow for a full-sized second tree. The rootstock a columnar tree is grown on, not the variety itself, is what keeps it narrow, so check the rootstock label at purchase rather than assuming the shape is guaranteed.

An ornamental crabapple bred to flower at the same time gives bees a source of compatible pollen without producing fruit you have to manage, which suits a garden that wants the bloom but not the harvest of a second tree. None of these options changes the underlying rule: the pollen still has to be fertile and the bloom still has to overlap, whichever shape the second source takes.

Common questions

I already have a Jonagold, does that mean I get no fruit at all?

Your Jonagold can still set fruit if something else nearby, such as a Golden Delicious or Rome Beauty, supplies fertile pollen to it. What Jonagold cannot do is pollinate your Ozark Gold in return, so Ozark Gold still needs a third, fertile-pollen tree of its own to fruit well.

Can two Ozark Gold trees pollinate each other?

Not reliably. Two trees of the same variety open at the same time, but apples generally need pollen from a genetically different variety to set a full crop, so a pair of Ozark Golds does not solve the problem the way a compatible partner does.
