Tomato hornworm in Missouri: When It Shows Up and What Stops It

Tomato hornworms show up in Missouri gardens in two waves: the first in late May through June, and a second, often heavier, wave in August through September. The timing tracks directly with the state’s growing season and the life cycle of the sphinx moth that produces them. If your tomato plants suddenly look like they’ve been through a hedge trimmer overnight, hornworms are almost always the culprit, and knowing when to watch for them is half the battle.

Missouri’s climate, straddling USDA hardiness zones 5b through 7a, gives tomato hornworms enough of a growing season to complete two full generations most years. Adult moths (called five-spotted hawk moths or sphinx moths) emerge from overwintering pupae buried in garden soil once soil temperatures climb into the 60s, typically mid-to-late May in the southern half of the state and early June farther north around St. Louis and Kansas City.

Those moths mate, lay eggs on the undersides of tomato leaves, and within a week the eggs hatch into tiny green caterpillars. The first generation does its damage through June and into early July. A second generation of moths emerges from that first batch, laying eggs that produce the caterpillars gardeners see wreaking havoc in late summer, right when tomatoes are loaded with fruit and gardeners are least willing to lose a plant.

Southeast Missouri’s Bootheel region, with its longer frost-free window, sometimes squeezes in a partial third generation in warm years. Farther north, one strong generation followed by a smaller second wave is more typical. Either way, late summer is when infestations tend to peak, since caterpillars from the second generation grow larger before finally dropping to the soil to pupate for winter.

Identifying a Tomato Hornworm (and Not Confusing It With Its Cousin)

A full-grown tomato hornworm can reach 4 inches long, thick as a finger, and bright green with white V-shaped stripes running diagonally down each side. The signature feature is the horn on the rear end, black in the true tomato hornworm (Manduca quinquemaculata).

Missouri gardens also host the tobacco hornworm (Manduca sexta), a close relative that looks almost identical but has seven diagonal white stripes instead of eight, and a red horn instead of black. Both feed on tomato, pepper, eggplant, and potato plants, and both get the same control treatment, so the distinction matters more for curiosity than for pest management. Either species is easy to miss at first because the green coloring blends perfectly with tomato foliage. Most gardeners notice the damage, stripped stems, dark green or black droppings (called frass) scattered on leaves below, before they spot the caterpillar itself.

Why They’re a Bigger Deal in Missouri Than in Some Other States

Missouri’s combination of hot, humid summers and a long growing season means tomato plants are vulnerable to hornworm damage for a wider stretch of the calendar than in cooler northern states. A single hornworm can defoliate an entire tomato branch within 48 hours once it reaches its final larval stage, and a handful of them working through a raised bed can strip a plant bare in under a week.

The economic sting isn’t limited to home gardens. Missouri’s commercial tomato and pepper growers, concentrated in the Bootheel and along the Missouri River bottoms, factor hornworm pressure into their pest management calendars every season, which is part of why University of Missouri Extension publishes regional pest alerts tracking moth flight activity through pheromone traps.

Natural Predators Already Working in Your Favor

Before reaching for any product, it’s worth checking a hornworm for small white capsules stuck to its back. Those are cocoons of the braconid wasp (Cotesia congregata), a parasitic insect that lays eggs inside the caterpillar. The wasp larvae eat the hornworm from within, then pupate on the surface in those rice-grain-sized white cases. A hornworm covered in braconid cocoons is already dying and is actively releasing next season’s wasp population into your garden.

Leaving a parasitized hornworm in place, rather than squashing it, lets dozens of new wasps emerge to attack future hornworms. It’s one of the few genuinely free pest control tools available to Missouri gardeners, and Extension entomologists consistently recommend against killing any hornworm carrying those white pods.

Ladybugs, lacewings, and paper wasps also prey on hornworm eggs and the smallest larval stages, though they’re far less effective against a caterpillar that’s already reached its thumb-sized final instar. Birds, particularly wrens and cardinals, will pick young hornworms off plants too, one more reason a diverse backyard with some bird habitat tends to have fewer severe outbreaks than a garden surrounded by bare lawn.

Practical Control Methods That Actually Work

Hand-picking remains the single most effective method for a typical home garden, especially once you train your eye to spot the frass droppings and trace them upward to the caterpillar. Early morning or early evening checks work best, since hornworms tend to rest in plain sight on stems during cooler hours and tuck deeper into foliage during the heat of the day. Dropping collected caterpillars into soapy water handles them quickly.

For larger infestations or vegetable rows too extensive for daily hand-picking, Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt), specifically the kurstaki strain, is the go-to biological insecticide. It targets caterpillars specifically, leaves bees and other pollinators unharmed, and breaks down within days of application. Spraying in the evening, after pollinators have left the area, and reapplying after rain gives the best results. Bt works only when caterpillars actually ingest treated leaves, so coverage on both sides of the foliage matters more than the amount sprayed.

A few other approaches round out a solid control plan:

  • Tilling soil in fall after harvest exposes overwintering pupae to freezing temperatures and hungry birds, cutting down next year’s moth population before it starts.
  • Black light traps set up at dusk can intercept adult sphinx moths before they lay eggs, though this works better on a larger property than a small urban lot.
  • Companion planting with dill, basil, or marigold doesn’t repel hornworms directly but attracts the parasitic wasps and other beneficial insects that keep populations in check.

Neem oil and spinosad-based sprays offer additional organic options, though both are somewhat less targeted than Bt and can affect other insect life if applied during daytime hours when pollinators are active.

Reducing Next Year’s Population

Since hornworms spend the winter as pupae buried 3 to 4 inches deep in garden soil, disturbing that soil after the growing season ends has an outsized effect on the following year’s numbers. Turning over tomato and pepper beds with a garden fork in October or November, after plants are pulled, brings pupae to the surface where freezing temperatures and foraging birds do the rest of the work.

Crop rotation helps too. Moving tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants to a different section of the yard each season means emerging moths have to travel farther to find host plants, and some simply won’t. It’s not a complete fix, since adult moths can fly considerable distances, but combined with fall tilling and consistent hand-picking through the season, most Missouri gardeners can keep hornworm damage to a manageable handful of chewed leaves rather than a stripped, fruitless plant.
