What Actually Stops Viburnum Leaf Beetle

Winter and Early Spring: Prune Out the Eggs

The single most effective, lowest-cost step is cutting out egg-infested twigs between late fall and early April, before hatch. Summer: Manage the Adults

Adults emerging in July are tougher and more mobile than larvae, and they can fly in from neighboring properties even after a yard’s own population has been knocked back. Contact insecticides labeled for adult beetles can help on high-value specimen shrubs, but for most home landscapes, the bigger payoff comes from staying ahead of the fall egg-laying period. Adults that survive the summer will be back on twigs by September, starting the whole cycle over.
