Since then it has spread across the state and into more than a dozen neighboring states, but Pennsylvania still carries the largest, most entrenched population in the country.

The Life Cycle That Determines When to Act
Timing matters more with this pest than with almost any other backyard nuisance, because each stage calls for a different response.
Egg Masses: The Fall and Winter Target
Adult females lay eggs from September through the onset of winter, gluing them to flat surfaces in rows and coating the mass with a grayish, putty-like secretion that hardens over time. A single mass often holds 30 to 50 eggs, and they show up in places people rarely think to check: the underside of outdoor furniture, tree trunks, retaining walls, vehicle wheel wells, even the siding of a house. Late August, like right now, sits at the peak of adult activity, which is exactly when populations are easiest to count and control before egg-laying begins.
What the Spotted Lanternfly Actually Damages
This isn’t a pest that bites or stings people or pets, and that’s worth saying clearly since it gets asked constantly. The real damage is economic and ecological, aimed squarely at plants.
The insect feeds by piercing plant tissue and sucking out sap, and it does this in large numbers on a single host. Its excretion, a sugary substance called honeydew, coats leaves and the ground below, which then grows a black sooty mold that can smother smaller plants and turn patios and cars sticky and grimy for weeks. Homeowners in heavily infested townships describe entire decks needing a hose-down every few days during peak season.
More than 70 plant species can serve as hosts, but Pennsylvania’s grape industry has taken the hardest hit. Spotted lanternflies show a strong preference for feeding and mating on this tree, so much that entomologists use it as a lure. - Report sightings outside the known quarantine zone through the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture’s online reporting tool, since early detection in new counties still matters for slowing the spread.
Homeowners with grapevines, fruit trees, or hops should watch feeding damage closely during August and September, since that’s when adult populations peak and vines are most vulnerable heading into harvest. Reporting Rules and Why the Quarantine Still Matters
