If you buy lily bulbs from an out-of-province supplier, especially bare-root stock shipped from warmer growing regions, inspect them before planting. A beetle or egg cluster hiding in packing material is a far more likely source of a fresh infestation than one flying in from a neighbor’s yard three properties over.

Newfoundland and Labrador’s climate compresses the beetle’s whole life cycle into a narrower window than gardeners elsewhere experience, which actually works slightly in your favor if you know when to look.
Spring Emergence, Late and Fast
Adults overwinter in leaf litter, mulch, and soil debris near where lilies grew the previous year, then emerge once soil temperatures climb consistently above roughly 50°F. By late July or August, mature larvae drop to the soil to pupate, emerging as new adults a few weeks later. Those late-summer adults feed briefly, then seek out overwintering sites before the first hard frost, which in Labrador and much of the island’s interior can arrive by mid-September. What Actually Stops It
Control comes down to timing, plant choice, and accepting that no single method wipes the beetle out in one season.
Hand removal is still the most reliable tool homeowners have. Adults are easiest to catch early in the morning when temperatures are cooler and they’re less likely to drop and disappear into mulch. Checking plants twice a week from beetle emergence through mid-July, focusing on the undersides of leaves for both adults and egg clusters, breaks the cycle before larvae can do serious damage. Squishing eggs directly on the leaf works fine if you’re not squeamish; otherwise scrape them into a bag.
Larvae respond to the same soapy-water-and-jar approach, though their excrement coating makes them slippery and unpleasant to grab bare-handed. A pair of garden gloves and a small brush make the job faster.
