Cutworms start feeding in British Columbia as soon as soil temperatures climb past roughly 50°F, which in most of the province means late March through May, with a second wave of activity in July and August in warmer interior valleys. What stops them isn’t a single product but a layered approach: physical collars around stems, reduced tillage timing, beneficial nematodes, and a few nights of flashlight scouting to catch larvae before they strip a row of seedlings.
When Cutworms Show Up, Region by Region

BC’s climate zones are wildly different from each other, and cutworm timing follows suit. A gardener in Kelowna deals with a different calendar than someone in Prince George or Nanaimo.
Coastal and Lower Mainland Gardens
In the Fraser Valley and on Vancouver Island, mild winters mean cutworm larvae or pupae often survive in the soil without a hard freeze to knock back populations. Moths emerge and lay eggs earlier here than almost anywhere else in the province, sometimes as early as March in a warm spring. That gives larvae a head start on tender transplants like tomatoes, peppers, and brassicas set out in April and May. Coastal growers also tend to see the variegated cutworm, a species that climbs plants rather than staying at the soil line, which makes collar barriers less effective on their own.
Interior and Okanagan Valleys
Hot, dry summers in the Okanagan and Thompson-Nicola regions push cutworm activity into a tighter window, typically peaking in May and June before soil temperatures get too extreme for larvae comfort. Some seasons bring a partial second generation in late July if a wet spring is followed by warm conditions. Vineyard and orchard growers in this region watch closely because cutworm damage to new grapevine shoots or young fruit tree bark can set growth back for weeks.
Northern BC and the Peace Region
Further north, around Fort St. John and the Peace River block, the growing season compresses everything into May through August. This area also has agricultural significance: dingy cutworm and army cutworm larvae are recognized pests of canola and cereal crops in the Peace, with outbreak years causing visible stand loss in fields. The short season means farmers and gardeners alike have less margin for delayed action once larvae are spotted.
Signs You’re Dealing With Cutworms, Not Something Else
Cutworm damage has a specific signature that’s easy to misdiagnose. Seedlings get severed at or just below the soil surface, often toppling over with the stem cleanly cut, not shredded the way slug damage looks. A row of transplants that was fine one evening and lying flat the next morning is the classic complaint.
Curled, gray-brown caterpillars found in the top inch or two of soil near damaged plants confirm the diagnosis. Most species curl into a tight C-shape when disturbed, which is where the name comes from, though it also refers to their habit of cutting plants off. Larvae feed at night and burrow into soil during the day, so daytime searches near the plant base often come up empty even when cutworms are the culprit.
Unlike slugs, cutworms leave no slime trail. Unlike wireworms, they don’t tunnel through root vegetables underground, they attack from the outside at the stem. That distinction matters because the control methods for each pest differ.
What Actually Stops Cutworms
No single tactic wipes out a cutworm population, but combining a few gives reliable protection for home gardens and small plots.
Physical Barriers
Cardboard or plastic collars pushed an inch into the soil and rising three inches above ground around each transplant stop surface-feeding species cold. This is the most consistently effective method for tomatoes, peppers, and brassica transplants, and it costs almost nothing since toilet paper tubes or cut plastic cups work fine. The catch is that climbing species like the variegated cutworm can bypass a short collar by going up the plant from above, so taller collars or a second control method help in coastal gardens where that species is common.
Biological and Cultural Controls
Beneficial nematodes applied to moist soil target cutworm larvae underground and are compatible with organic growing. Parasitic wasps and ground beetles also prey on cutworm larvae naturally, so avoiding broad-spectrum insecticide sprays that kill these predators pays off over a season. Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt), specifically the kurstaki strain, works against young cutworm larvae when applied to foliage in the evening, though it’s less effective once larvae reach later growth stages.
Fall tillage that turns over the top few inches of soil exposes overwintering larvae and pupae to birds and cold temperatures, which is one reason coastal gardens with mild winters see more consistent pressure. Removing weeds and plant debris in fall also reduces egg-laying sites, since many cutworm moths prefer laying eggs in grassy or weedy areas at field edges before larvae migrate into cultivated beds.
When to Consider Chemical Options
For larger outbreaks, particularly in agricultural settings in the Peace region or Okanagan orchards, registered insecticides may be necessary. Any product used should be one currently registered for cutworm control in Canada, and label directions on timing and pre-harvest intervals should be followed closely since cutworm larvae are most vulnerable to sprays in their early growth stages, not once they’ve grown large enough to do visible damage.
Preventing Next Year’s Damage
Scouting at night with a flashlight during the two weeks after transplanting catches the problem before it spreads. Larvae are easiest to spot and hand-pick during this window, and a few minutes checking the soil around vulnerable plants beats losing an entire row of seedlings to discover the cause later.
Delaying transplant dates by even a week or two in coastal areas, once the first spring generation of moths has laid most of its eggs, can reduce exposure for tender seedlings. In the Peace region, crop rotation away from canola and cereals in fields with a known history of dingy cutworm or army cutworm outbreaks gives populations less continuity from year to year.
Birds account for a meaningful share of natural cutworm control, and gardens that support songbird populations through shrub cover and reduced pesticide use tend to see fewer severe outbreaks over time. It’s a small trade-off, letting a hedge grow a bit wilder, but it pays back in fewer mornings finding seedlings cut down overnight.
