Either way, the adult moth is a chunky, fast-flying sphinx moth (sometimes called a hawk moth) with a five-inch wingspan and mottled gray-brown wings. The Life Cycle Behind the Timing

Adult moths emerge from overwintering pupae buried a few inches in the soil, then mate and lay pale green, spherical eggs on the undersides of leaves within days. Those eggs hatch in about a week, and the resulting larva goes through five growth stages over roughly three to four weeks, ballooning from the size of a grain of rice to nearly four inches long. Once fully grown, the caterpillar drops to the soil, burrows down, and pupates, ready to emerge as a moth two to four weeks later if temperatures stay warm, or overwinter until spring if the season is ending.

What Actually Stops Tomato Hornworms in Arizona Gardens

Checking plants every two to three days during peak season, especially in the cooler morning hours when caterpillars are more active on exposed leaves, catches most of them before serious damage sets in. Dropping them into soapy water or simply relocating them far from the garden handles the rest.

Letting Natural Predators Do the Work
